Th 2 CONC e Rube-Goldberg-type operation for making wedges for the mining companies was a necessity, Ji 2 CONC m says, because when he got a lot of orders, he was unable to find anybody to work for him. 2 CONT “Nobody else would stand up at the saw all day long,” he recalled, “and unless I could figur 2 CONC e out some way for one guy to do it all, I’d lose all that business.” 2 CONT He rigged up an automatic feeder to push the 2 x 4’s into a circular saw, which cuts them in 2 CONC to 1 foot lengths. At the same time, another saw, on the same contraption, is running at a 9 2 CONC 0-degree angle to the first, and is moving forward and backward one foot at a time. Jim ha 2 CONC s fixed up a sloping arrangement here which allows him to manually feed the 1-foot-long piec 2 CONC e of lumber into the beveled holder. 2 CONT It is cut into two wedges by the second saw, and both drop into an open burlap bag held belo 2 CONC w on an old wagon wheel tire. There are four such bags mounted on the steel rim, and Jim ca 2 CONC n swing a different sack under the saw when he has 50 wedges in a particular sack. The rim i 2 CONC s mounted on ball-bearings and turns easily. 2 CONT He can now keep up with orders, no matter how large, for wedges to be used in underground ti 2 CONC mbering operations or for any other purpose. 2 CONT The only problem, he notes, is that in the winter months when his shop must be kept closed 2 CONC , the sawdust “sure does get thick in here.” 2 CONT Jim is a native New Mexican. He was born on a ranch near House, New Mexico-a small communit 2 CONC y in Quay County which used to be noted for its basketball teams. “In the ‘20’s,” Jim said 2 CONC , “House won two state championships. Beat Albuquerque and everybody else.” Records show th 2 CONC at this is so. 2 CONT Jim was raised on the family ranch with two brothers and one sister. They went to elementar 2 CONC y school at Independence, N.M., a smaller community near House, and to high school at House 2 CONC . Jim played basketball and also ran the mile on the track team while in high school. He gr 2 CONC aduated in 1935. He was one of nine in his graduation class. “Wasn’t too big of a school, 2 CONC ” he noted. 2 CONT Jim went to work on his father’s ranch for a while, but since he had been doing the same thi 2 CONC ng all through his school years, he wanted a change. So he came to Northwestern New Mexico a 2 CONC s a cowpuncher. 2 CONT He punched cows for W.F. Pitt at the 3 Circle Ranch out between Crownpoint and Chaco Canyo 2 CONC n beginning in 1936. “I like this area from the start,” Jim said. 2 CONT For the next three or four years he worked as a cowhand all through that remote region. H 2 CONC e was a cowpuncher for Mark Elkins, Tom Elkins, I.K. Westbrook and for his uncle, W.F. Pitt 2 CONC , and got to know the area quite well. “Then in about 1940 everything changed for me,” Jim r 2 CONC ecalled. 2 CONT He was punching cows out near Hospah and was asked by Wade Smith to help him build a new ran 2 CONC chhouse. Jim became an apprentice carpenter and was introduced to the world of making thing 2 CONC s with wood. Cowpunching became a thing of the past for him. 2 CONT “We tore down two old ranch houses to make him a new one just about three miles from Puebl 2 CONC o Bonita,” Jim recalled, “and I spent about a full month just straightening out old nails an 2 CONC d cleaning board. But it was fun, and we built a fine home for him” 2 CONT In 1941 Jim worked at Fort Wingate building forms for concrete igloos and warehouse faciliti 2 CONC es, then took a job in Lubbock, Texas, at Reese Air Force base as a carpenter. That November 2 CONC , he caught pneumonia and went back to House to recuperate. When the Japanese bombed Pearl H 2 CONC arbor on December 7, Jim tried to enlist on the 8th, but did not get into the service until J 2 CONC anuary 12, 1942 when his recuperation from the earlier bout with pneumonia was well advanced. 2 CONT He served four years in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He spent 18 months in t 2 CONC he Aleutian Islands and was being trained as a gunner to head for Europe when that portion o 2 CONC f the war ended. He also recalls being at Langley Field, Virginia, when secret testing of th 2 CONC e first jet airplanes was under way. “You couldn’t believe it,” he said incredulously, “thos 2 CONC e things came zipping by with no propellors at all.” 2 CONT While in the service, Jim met Pearl Shelley in Winslow, Arizona. She was working in a depar 2 CONC tment store as bookkeeper and he was visiting friends and relatives there while on furlough 2 CONC . They became “more than a little” interested in each other, and on his next leave, they wen 2 CONC t to Joseph City, Arizona and were married on July 12, 1945. 2 CONT After the war, Jim took a home-building job in Tucson, Ariz., then moved to Winslow where h 2 CONC e opened up a cabinet shop. He operated this for almost three years, heard there was a lot o 2 CONC f work in the Clovis, N.M., area, so the Devenports moved there. “I couldn’t find all this w 2 CONC ork I had heard about,” Jim said, “so I put in a cabinet shop in Portales.” 2 CONT He operated this for a few months, then sold it and put in a shop in Lovington, N.M. He kep 2 CONC t this going full blast for several years until his doctor told him he had to get out of tha 2 CONC t business and stay out. So he sold the shop and moved to Bowie, Ariz., as a carpenter. “ 2 CONC I soon had me a shop there, though,” he said, “and ran it from 1953 until we came back to Gra 2 CONC nts in 1956.” 2 CONT When he got here, he went partners with Lloyd Bliss and Wesley Tietjen in operating a machin 2 CONC e shop in Milan. “We had a going deal until all the companies put in their own machine shops 2 CONC ,” Jim recalls, “so I just kept on at the same spot and made a cabinet shop out of the buildi 2 CONC ng. Been here ever since.” 2 CONT Jim and Pearl have had five children. The first two, Jim and George were born in Winslow 2 CONC . Jim now operates a TV repair shop in Grants, and he and his wife, the former Joan Jenkerso 2 CONC n of Belen, have provided four grandchildren for the Devenports to spoil. George was kille 2 CONC d in an automobile accident last year. 2 CONT John was born in Lovington, and just recently took over operation of his father’s cabinet sh 2 CONC op in Milan. Daughter Neena (spelled that way so she wouldn’t be called “nine-uh”) lives i 2 CONC n Wichita Falls, Texas, where her husband is a career Army man. Their youngest son, Bruce, i 2 CONC s on a mission in Thailand for the Church of Latter Day Saints. 2 CONT Jim has built a lot of homes in Grants and Milan, and has “done more remodeling and cabinetm 2 CONC aking than you might suppose.” He has yet, however, to complete his own home at La Cantina 2 CONC , in Lobo Canyon. “I’ll get around to that one of these days, I guess,” he said, but he didn 2 CONC ’t sound too convincing. 2 CONT “Whoever heard of a shoemaker’s kid who wasn’t barefoot?” he asked. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 8 May 2004 3 TIME 11:36:55 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE C:\PAF\PIXfam\momdad71.jpg 2 TITL Jim and Pearl 1971 2 NOTE At Jim and Joan's apartment, around Jim & Pearl's 25th silver anniversary 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE C:\PAF\PIXfam\jiml71.jpg 2 TITL Jim L. Nita still living in March 2007 2 CONT 2 CONT Letter from Jack Langenegger to Jim C. Devenport, December 2002: 2 CONT 2 CONT Hi Jim, 2 CONT 2 CONT It was good to hear from you. Nita isn't doing too well at the moment, but we're hoping for b 2 CONC etter days ere long. She needs a knee replacement very badly, but her internist doesn't wan 2 CONC t her to have it because of her pacemaker, which means she's on a blood thinner. Her oncologi 2 CONC st is treating her for nodules on her lung. She is taking a series of three monthly shots o 2 CONC f FASLODEX, a new cancer medicine. She had breast cancer five years ago, and mastectomies eig 2 CONC hteen months later. Her original surgery was a lumpectomy. Her oncologist thinks the lung nod 2 CONC ules are from the breast cancer. SHE (the oncologist) thinks her prognosis is very good wit 2 CONC h the new treatment. In March, after the third shot, she will have a CATSCAN to see what's go 2 CONC ing on. Please keep her in your prayers. She (and I) are firm believers in prayer and hopeful 2 CONC ly she will improve. She is a real trooper, staying in good spirits and staying busy. I'm doi 2 CONC ng very well, having no problems that curtail my activities very much. 2 CONT 2 CONT My ham radio history doesn't amount to much. When Jack Wade was in about the fifth grade, a l 2 CONC ocal ham whose wife was Jack Wade's teacher, asked his wife to choose a member of her class w 2 CONC ho she thought would learn the code (a requirement then) and she chose him. In helping him le 2 CONC arn the code, etc. I became interested and we took the novice test together, which we both pa 2 CONC ssed. We had a small 25 watt transmitter (code only, no audio capabilities) and we both mad 2 CONC e a lot of QSOs. 2 CONT In about a year I took the general test and passed it. However, Jack Wade had become too invo 2 CONC lved in basketball and lost interest in Ham Radio. 2 CONT About that time, Nita went to work for the local weekly newspaper so that she could give m 2 CONC e a Heathkit 200 watt transmitter that worked on 160, 80, 40, 15, and 10 meters. I built it i 2 CONC n my spare time that winter and spring and finally completed assembling it. I was almost afra 2 CONC id to turn it on in case it blew up, but it worked perfectly on all bands. I had an inverte 2 CONC d V antenna with 80 foot elements going both directions, making 160 feet total. 2 CONT I was on the air from 1959 (the year I got my general license) until we built our home in tow 2 CONC n (Hagerman) in 1973. I haven't been on the air since then. 2 CONT I still have the old Heathkit transmitter stored in the attic. I have no idea if it would wor 2 CONC k or not, and don't know what I'll ever do with it. 2 CONT I built a bunch of Heathkit stuff, including a vacuum tube volt-ammeter, a test instrument fo 2 CONC r electrical equipment on cars, trucks and tractors, three Heathkit digital bathroom scales ( 2 CONC digital was a novelty in those days) that were extremely accurate. 2 CONT Mine worked very well for about fifteen years, but when it quit, I couldn't buy parts since h 2 CONC eathkit had sold and their successor company didn't stock the stress bar I needed to fix it 2 CONC . Mary Ann's worked about the same length of time and the third was a gift and I don't know a 2 CONC bout it. I built an instrument for my ham receiver to narrow the band to eliminate outside in 2 CONC terference (I don't remember what we called it) and it worked very well. 2 CONT In my contacts I talked to hams in Australia, So. America, Canada, etc. One of my most memora 2 CONC ble contacts was with a ham aboard a freighter sailing through the Strait Of Gibraltar. My ve 2 CONC ry first was with a Ham-W5QWL- in South Carolina on ten meters. I remember his call letters b 2 CONC ecause he identified himself in that Southern drawl saying "this is W5QWL, W5 Quarter wave le 2 CONC ngth, pronouncing the letters phonetically. 2 CONT That's about it, Jim. Thanks for writing. If you have any updates on the Devenport family tre 2 CONC e, Nita would probably (and me) be interested in seeing what you've found. 2 CONT Give our love to all of your family. 2 CONT Jack 1 CHAN 2 DATE 29 Mar 2007 3 TIME 05:56:36 0 @I101@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX M 1 _UID 288D440ECD30D5119C6887E84AFA886B94C3 1 FAMS @F38@ 1 FAMC @F37@ 0 @I102@ INDI 1 NAME LIVING 1 SEX F 1 _UID 2A8D440ECD30D5119C6887E84AFA886B96E3 1 FAMS @F38@ 0 @I103@ INDI 1 NAME Nellie Lea Laura /Wright/ 2 SURN Wright 2 GIVN Nellie Lea Laura 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 26 May 1912 2 PLAC House, Quay, New Mexico 1 DEAT 2 DATE 17 Jun 1993 2 PLAC Cottonwood, Yavapai, Arizona 1 BURI 2 DATE 21 Jun 1993 2 PLAC Winslow, Navajo, Arizona 1 _UID 2C8D440ECD30D5119C6887E84AFA886B9803 1 FAMS @F39@ 1 FAMC @F398@ 1 NOTE Nellie died from complications of a bout with pneumonia several years before he death, the 2 CONT subsequent poor health resulting in an enlarged and weakened heart.
